Mahopac Moves On from Disgraced Former School Board President

Former Mahopac school board President Ray Cote was on the ballot yesterday, even though he had withdrawn from the race.

Cote resigned amid local and media furor over a private comment he made about a parent that was captured on a live microphone and aired on the district's live feed of the April 8 meeting.

His name appeared on the ballot since they had already been printed. Any votes cast for him just weren't counted.

According to the election results on the school district's website, the two incumbents who did run for re-election were granted new terms by the voters:

  • Michael Sclafani 1,145
  • Leslie Mancuso 1,106
  • Brian Mahoney 937

Cote had posted this statement on the district website:

"I would like to apologize for my choice of words after the close of the Board meeting on April 8, 2014, which are regretful. My words were inappropriate and do not reflect my feelings or attitudes. I will strive to regain the trust and respect of the community."

The trustees also posted a statement:

"The Mahopac Board of Education acknowledges the apology of Board President Raymond Cote regarding his comments after the close of the Board meeting on April 8, 2014. We are disappointed by and do not condone this lapse in judgment on the part of Mr. Cote. The Board of Education expects all of its Members and meeting participants and attendees to act in a respectful manner. It is our commitment to move forward as a community in a positive manner and focus on the education of our children."
